Scott Hopes : update on Manatee School District - 3/19

Scott Hopes
Board member and past chairman of the Manatee County School Board will be at Tea Party Manatee to bring us up to date with the goings on of the school board.

Here's some of what you missed

  • Scott works to save taxpayer money: after he came on board in 2017 he changed the district’s money policies, introducing “risk tolerance.” Result? Moody’s rating of the district’s finances went from a Baa2 to A2. And Hopes said, “That’s a big deal for the cost of money for (the district)—it saved $3.7 million” so far.
  • SAFETY: “After the Parkland shooting, we were the first district in the state to have trained armed officers at each school.” He said, “I believe we should have certain teachers and administrators trained and armed” at the schools.
  • “With Rich Corcoran as Commissioner of Education and Governor DeSantis—we’re moving to (be) more conservative in education.”
  • Linda Schaich pointed out: between 2008-18 the district gave away $80 million—they told the builders we didn’t want any impact fees!
  • Our Core: our core mission is a child, when they leave our district, is ready for career or college. I look at how everything we do affects our core.”
  • What Can Citizens Do? Volunteer to help kids learn to read. “I don’t think there’s anything better than having an adult or older child read with a child. How? Contact the school is probably the best way.
