Emily Walsh, publisher, The Observer

Emily Walsh is the Publisher of the Longboat, East County, Sarasota and Siesta Key Observers; Season and LWR Life magazines and with the Observer Media Group, a family-owned multimedia company that publishes 12 newspapers, three magazines, seven web sites, mobile app and multiple social channels in Florida. Previously, Emily ran the Observer’s digital operations for seven years and as Social Editor for eight years. Emily also was a professional ballerina with the Sarasota Ballet from 1995 to 2000. Emily serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center, Ringling College Library Association, Bay Park Conservancy, Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease; American Jewish Committee – West Coast Florida Chapter; and Florida Press Association. She serves on the national Board of Directors of the America’s Newspapers. Emily is member of Leadership Florida Cornerstone Class XXXIV and the International Women’s Forum. Emily’s awards and achievements include winning Girls Inc.’s “She Knows Where She’s Going” award in 2006, being named one of Sarasota Magazine’s “100 Most Powerful People” in Sarasota in 2007, Editor & Publisher’s “25 Under 35: The Next Generation of Publishing Leaders” in 2012, First Step of Sarasota’s “Caring Heart of the Year” in 2012; American Jewish Committee’s Civic Achievement Award in 2016; and Women’s Resource Center’s “Wonder Woman” award in 2018. Emily's most proud achievement is her nine-year old son, Rhys Parry.

Valerie Ellery Fl DOE Human Trafficking Education Specialist

Valerie Ellery is currently serving as the Florida Department of Education's Human Trafficking K-12 Education Specialist (Title IV Part A). This position is the first in the state and Florida is the first in the nation to mandate required education K-12.

Valerie also is A21's Human Trafficking Education and Curriculum Consultant working to abolish this injustice—a few current projects include: Dallas ISD to train educators on BANC for 160,000 students, Primary Prevention Curriculum for Thailand, South Africa to bring BANC to two million students.

Valerie has dedicated more than 30 years to the field of education in various roles as a National Board Certified Teacher, curriculum specialist, mentor, reading coach, international educational consultant, and best-selling author for ten years. Her books have been used internationally in classrooms and universities to inspire educators to motivate and engage today’s learners.

She is under contract for a 2020 publication with the working title "Teaching Kids to Change the World."

In addition, Valerie authored several other resources to impact the hearts and soul of those who read them. Also, she co-authored two secondary curricula in the area of self-worth and human trafficking that are impacting young adults in 37 nations: Bodies Are Not Commodities (BANC) (A21 Campaign, 2014) and ShineHope (Hillsong, 2014). The A21 Campaign is a global 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-governmental organization that works to fight human trafficking, including sexual exploitation & trafficking, forced slave labor, bonded labor, involuntary domestic servitude, and child soldiery.

She is dedicated to using innovative, interactive, and informative ways to inspire her audiences. She lives in Florida with her husband, Gregg, and has four adult children, two beautiful grandchildren, and two more on the way in 2020.
