Rod Thomson Bio:

Rod has 30 years of newspaper experience, working for newspapers in Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa and Florida. He has been published nationally in the New York Times, People Magazine, Focus on the Family and Newsmax, plus many state, regional and industry publications. He has been a guest on the Hugh Hewitt Show and the Michael Medved Show.

He left full-time newspaper staff work in 2000 to become the Administrator of Hand to the Plow Ministries, which drills wells, builds churches and supports an orphanage and hospital in Haiti.

In January 2006 he became Executive Editor of the Gulf Coast Business Review and oversaw an expansion in circulation, geography and size of the weekly publication, covering from Tampa Bay to Naples. He now runs The Thomson Group, a communications and public relations firm headquartered in Sarasota. He is also the current president of the Sarasota Republican Club.

Rod has two books published: Living Water: Hudson Taylor and the Call of Inland China, which Christian Literature Crusade put out in 2001 and is now in its second printing; and Living Threads: The Unbroken Connections of God’s People Through the Ages, published in 2013. Both are available on

Rod also has written biographies for books on Martin Luther, C.H. Spurgeon and Jonathan Edwards, all published by Bridge-Logos.

He also published a magazine for seven years called Onward Christian Soldiers, providing short profiles of historic Christians and their impact on the faith over the centuries.

Rod's areas of writing experience are broad, from every level of local government to extensive coverage of the Iowa presidential caucuses, from an investigation of the U.S. Army’s transportation of chemicals in civilian airports in the late 1980s that changed national military policy to state legislatures, business and human interest stories.

He has won numerous journalism writing awards from the Associated Press, the Inland Daily Press Association and others.

Rod was born and raised in Flint, MI, and graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and minor in economics.

He has been married to Kim Thomson for 36 years. They have eight children ranging from homemakers to entrepreneurs to service professionals. They also have four grandchildren.
